on the rescue efforts. >>> crews are working around the clock to get back inside the west virginia mine where 25 workers died and four are missing. >> god bless them. they're out there giving all they have. and it's a slow process. >> reporter: teams must drill down more than 1,000 feet to ventilate the toxic gases that forced rescuers out. it may be wednesday night at the earliest, before officials know whether the air is safe. the energy company's upper big branch mine has a history of violations for not properly ventilating highly combustible methane gas. emergency crews were sent racing there during monday afternoon's shift change. >> it's quite evidence -- evident to us that something went terribly wrong. >> reporter: they said a carbon monoxide warning was the first hint of trouble. >> because some victims are still in the mine, not all have been identified. this community is praying for a miracle. >> by golly, if i'm on that side of the table and that's my father, my brother, my uncle, my cussin, i'm going to have hope. >> reporter: michelle kinney got word last last night that she lost h

virginia. greensboro, charlotte. just approaching charleston, west virginia. and by tomorrow morning, we will see light rain in the region. and on and off during the day tomorrow. most of this will pass across virginia. we'll be in the northern fringe of that, seeing some rain in our area, tomorrow afternoon. into the evening hours. before it clears out late tomorrow night. look at temperatures. still another mild day. our normal high is 66, 67. that's where we are right now. 66, 68 in washington. a little more sun, south of d.c. 62 in oakland. not too bad out there. and 57 off the water. cooling down in ocean city. still very dry. dew point is down to mid-30s. clouds coming down late tonight. we're going to have to get moist before we see the rain coming down. winds very, very light. they have been out of the south and southwest. here's that little system over portions of northern virginia. it's heading across the carolinas with the rain. now it's in the western carolinas. southwestern virginia getting light rain. all of this is moving off to the east/northeast. just south of washington

be still alive, buried in west virginia. kathryn brown reports for wjz, from whitesville with more on the rescue efforts. >> reporter: crews are making headway, high above a west virginia mine, where four men are still missing. they're drilling holes through a thousand feet of earth and rock. >> we put an exhausting fan on that hole. so we could take area readings that measure the quality of the air that is down in the mine. >> reporter: reese rels cuers -- rescuers can't go back in until the poisonous gas gets back out. they believe that methane contributed to the huge explosion. but this is still a rescue operation, until the other four miners are reskied -- are rescued. >> crews are trying to send a signal to the missing men who may have been able to make it to an airtight chamber with food and water. >> we know they didn't come out. we know that is the next option, that they went to that chamber. >> reporter: crews are trying to comfort those who have lost a loved one. >> barbara aliff helped a man whose family member didn't make it. >> he looked like a marine sergeant. and to

in virginia. a teenager shot to death by a police officer. after the teen tried tone a -- to flee a restaurant, without paying for his meal. >>> the virginia supreme court says in the international house of pancakes restaurant is not responsible for compensating the family of that teenager. this was the scene back in alexandria in 2006. an off-duty officer, moonlighting as a security guard, chased after 18-year-old aaron brown and friends who rushed out of the restaurant without paying. the officers opened fire. the supreme court said the officer was acting as an officer, not as a restaurant employee when he shot the teen. >> reporter: the city of alexandria settled a lawsuit with brown's family. >>> sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene shortly after 3:00 in essex. the fire broke out in the block of hopewell drive. it took minutes for fire to be brought under control. >>> the state of maryland is always struggling to find enough qualified foster parents. what happened recently shocked a middle river woman. as mike schuh reports, she believes her application was denied illegally, because of re

in west virginia. crews are once again forced to turn back because of dangerous conditions. we have the report for wjz, at least one emergency rescue chamber was found empty. another tragic sign the four missing miners did not survive. >> reporter: rescuers are making another attempt to locate the missing miners underground. >> we are sending two mine rescue teams for a total of 16 people. >> reporter: crews above ground believe they were able to make conditions safe enough to resume the search after smoke forced them out this morning. they'll try to reach the only air-tight rescue chamber they haven't checked. an attempt to lower a camera didn't work. >> the bore hole put in at the refuge chamber did not hit a void, it hit a solid pillar. so that hole that was drilled from the surface does no use to us at all. >> reporter: a grim reality is starting to sink in. >> we're hoping that there's a fire burning. >> reporter: president barack obama has asked for a full report by next week on what went wrong in this mine. today, he offered his con dollenses to the family and expressed appre

. down through washington county. down through portions of west virginia. another batch that moved to the west. about an hour or so ago. in the upper eastern shore. take a look at that area from newark, to elkton. just approaching the delaware- maryland border. also around galena, just moving through that area. this is moving quickly off to the east, around 45 miles an hour. the sun is already out here for portions of western carroll county. we have sun here. but another batch just popped up. i think this will weaken considerably. temperatures will drop. i think we've seen cooling and stabilizing in the atmosphere. but for the time being, there is stabilizing. moving around 45 miles an hour. that will affect eastern frederick county. western carroll county. around the city now, pretty quiet. but another little batch of light rain activity still going on to the west. still taking a look at the temperatures. here in tv hill, we drop to the low 70s. same thing. elkton, 74. 83, ocean city. 74, 57. and that cooler air is headed in our direction, as the winds go west/northwest. we'll coo
